It is situated at an elevation of 2,438 meters (7,999 ft) and is surrounded by the Karakoram mountain range. The valley is home to the Balti people, who are of Tibetan descent.

The best time to visit Skardu is from May to October, when the weather is warm and dry. However, the valley is accessible only by air or road from May to October as the roads are blocked by snow from November to April.
